In the poem "The Birth of the World," the skunk flying over the sea finds its first nest in a bog. A bog is a mystical and frightening place. Dangerous bog eyes were considered a gateway to the afterlife. The bog is guarded by Hiisi, from whom gifts are also received: Bog skunks are collected for the winter in cupboards, as they keep moths and other pests away. Bogs provide delicious jams and wonderfully nourishing peat. Peat applied to the entire body in a sauna removes toxins.
