How could anyone have imagined that heating tree stumps would produce a thick and sticky substance, tar? Only the Spirit of the Pine could have told people about it! Tar has traditionally been used to heal external and internal ailments of the body, and to impregnate boats, buildings and furniture. When you find an old, shield-barked petäjä, you have found a fairy tree. Its roots are within the Earth and its branches reach into the heavens. It has stood still for ages. Finnish oral tradition and stories show how deeply and significantly tar has been a part of everyday life and livelihood. And it still is!
